It is important to replace your missing teeth. If not, you may experience shifting of your remaining teeth and bone loss in your jaw. You may also experience difficulty with eating. Fortunately, patients have options to replace their missing teeth. For instance, dental bridges are great for replacing one or more adjacent teeth.

How Do Dental Bridges Work?

In short, dental bridges are made of dental crowns on both ends with a false tooth in the middle. The crowns are attached to abutment teeth in order to replace the missing tooth. If you do not have suitable natural teeth to use for anchors, dental implants can be used in conjunction with your dental bridge.

If you are recommended for dental bridges, your dentist will prep the abutment teeth accordingly. Next, impressions are made to be sent to lab. The lab will create your dental bridge and send it to your dentist. Once it is ready, your next appointment includes permanently attaching the bridge.  With proper care, your dental bridge can last up to seven years.

Types Of Dental Bridges

A traditional dental bridge is the most common style. You must have natural teeth on each side of your gap. They will be crowned and used to anchor the bridge.

A Marilyn bridge is typically used to replace a single tooth that has two healthy natural teeth on each side. The adjacent teeth are not crowned. Instead, the prosthetic tooth has thin wings on each side. These wings are bonded to the back of the natural teeth using special cement.

When a patient does not have healthy teeth that can support a traditional bridge, implants can be used to create anchors. The implants are given time to heal before the bridge is installed.

Another option is a cantilever bridge. This bridge is attached to just one crowned natural tooth. It is not as strong as the other options but effective, nonetheless.

How Do I Maintain My Dental Bridge?

Dental bridges require the same care as your natural teeth. You should brush your teeth twice a day and floss your remaining natural teeth. You can eat normally for the most part, but you must avoid chewing on hard foods like ice or hard candy. It is also important to visit your dentist regularly for cleanings and exams.
